WEAVER + trader Bilum Bags SMALL
We are so privileged to be the latest stockist of this absolutely breathtakingly beautiful Bilum bags.
A bilum is a traditional woven string bag worn mainly by women in Papua New Guinea. These bilums are hand-woven using a traditional weaving technique. Bilum designs speak of universal stories, shared experiences that form chapters of the weaver's life. The colours are a reflection of the artistry of the individual.
They are purchased from weavers in PNG allowing them better access to health and education. It also allows them to bring their traditional hand woven bilum bags to a contemporary audience. Every bag sold is a step to empowering the women and their families, many of whom are living in squatter settlements.
Bilum bags to carry through the seasons, to be treasured for a lifetime.
From WEAVER + trader....
Nicole, WEAVER+trader founder, has loved and worn bilum bags for over 20 years and this enduring respect for the traditional craft of the weavers has forged a wonderful collaboration that empowers the women and brings the beauty of their work to a wider, contemporary market.
It is a labour of care and love to make each bilum - one bag can take the weaver 5 weeks to complete. We pay a premium price in respect for the work and skill involved in each bag and so that the weavers can earn a living from their craft.
