OUTDOOR OR INDOOR PLANT - Olea Europea Mission Olive Tree in 30cm pot
The humble Olive Tree, olea europea...it's having a moment and it's easy to see why! Some might say it's the new Fiddle Leaf Fig, but instead of giving out lush jungle vibes it radiates a softer more ethereal tone.
With its delicate, soft green leaves and thin grey branches, an olive tree will make an elegant statement. And while we can't just jet off to the Mediterranean we might as well replicate that casual laid-back rustic vibe, that is synonymous with holidays, right here in our own homes!
This particular Olive plant is a Mission Olive Tree with a current height between 1.8m to 2.2m. This species is an evergreen shrub native to the Mediterranean, Asia and Africa. The silver green leaves house small white, feathery flowers that bloom during spring and summer. Olea 'Mission' is drought tolerant and easily adaptable to coastal conditions. This variety is also very resistant to extreme cold.
Olive trees are as happy in Australia as they are on the coast of the Mediterranean sea. Although this ancient species is typically an outdoor plant, they are becoming a popular choice for indoor styling.
Olive Tree's are at their happiest outside, potted into the ground, in full sun. They look amazing potted into a striking pot sitting on a sunny courtyard or porch. Just remember lots of sun.
If you want to create that rustic look indoors you will need to remember they are accustomed to growing outdoors so you just need to make sure you pop them in a sunny spot in your home (think directly in-front of a north facing window) and take them outside occasionally for a good dose of UV light.
Water regularly, but only lightly as they do not like over watering. Avoid your Olive, either indoors or outdoors, sitting in wet cold soil. Allow the top inch of soil in the pot to try out in between waterings. Olive trees, since they are native to the Mediterranean, are particularly suited to drier air (like the kind found in most homes), so they don’t need to be misted.
WE RECOMMEND PLANTING IN...
Olive trees need to be potted in a large enough pot for their roots to have room to grow, otherwise you risk it becoming 'pot-bound.' We recommend increasing the current pot size by 5-10cm within a 6-12 month period. As they are a fruiting plant they will require regular fertilisation to their soil. We recommend the range of plant care products by We The Wild
to meet an Olive Trees needs.
If elevating your olive choose a pot with a drainage hole or ensure you use a drip tray within your large pot to catch any water that you allow to drain through. A large Presley Pot
(as pictured) will look magical with an Olive Tree sitting inside of it.
