Hildewintera colademononis, Monkey Tails botanical name, belong to the cactus family and their origin can be traced back to the Bolivian countryside in Santa Cruz. Monkey Tail cactus are epilithic in nature, meaning in their natural habitat they are most commonly found growing on or between steep rocks or hanging above a jungle below.

A single plant can have three to five stems, which branch at the bottom. The plant grows upright for up to 10 - 15cm's  then the stems become heavy and droop. They produce beautiful bright red flowers that bloom for a few days then turn to fruits with a brief life span. 

LIGHT

Ideally an outdoor plant as they love the intense sunlight only the great outdoors offer. If growing indoors your Monkey Tail will need the sunniest brightest spot in your home.  A Monkey Tail cactus will grow roughly 20-30cm yearly outdoors, significantly less if grown indoors. 

WATER 

Like all cactus they are drought tolerant so water only when the soil is dry.  Once the soil is dry 3-4cm below the surface offer a full wetting of the plant so that all roots have access to moisture, allow to dry out fully before re-watering. A minimal amount of watering is required over winter during their dormant period. 

WE RECOMMEND POTTING INTO..

These adorable little monkey tail cactus don't need oodles of extra soil for now - they could quite happily stay in their growers pot for another 12 months. These little growers pot fit nicely inside a 9cm textured cement pot. For a more elevated pot a small sized Gro-Pot would make such a beautiful choice.
