INDOOR OR OUTDOOR PLANT - Epiphyllum (Curly Sue) in 17cm & 12.5cm hanging pots

Want an easy to care for orchid cactus that has the most stunning bright flowers? Enter the Epiphyllum mixed variety. Epipphyllum's are a genus of 19 species of epiphytic plants in the cactus family, native to Central America. Common names for these species include climbing cacti, orchid cacti and leaf cacti.

These members of the cactus genus are also sometimes referred to as the “orchid cactus," although they are not related to the orchid. Unlike desert cacti, rain forest cacti lack sharp thorns, although they do have tiny hair-like spines at the joints of their strap-like stems. In the wild, the white blooms of the ephiphyllum open only at night. But plant breeders have created day-blooming epiphyllum hybrids with flowers of orange, red, pink, violet and yellow.
The mother of the Epiphyllum cactus, curly locks, was from Guatemala. It was a plant that sprouted one or more abnormal curved stems.  Curly locks have bright green, twisting stems. It produces 3-inch (7.6 cm.) wide white flowers with 6-inch (15 cm.) long tubes that open at night. This is because in nature it is pollinated by moths and bats, and these night animals can see the big white blooms easily.

LIGHT

They prefer bright but filtered light, and will burn if they receive too much sun. Epiphyllums do well in ordinary household temperatures a courtyard or porch as long as they don't get exposed to frosts.

WATER

Rain forest cacti such epiphyllums require humidity and moisture, but should never be allowed to become waterlogged. Ensure you give your plant a good soak every 2-3 weeks in the warmer  months and allow it to dry fully before re-watering.

WE RECOMMEND PLANTING IN...

These plants look spectacular simply popped inside a Cade Hanging Pot. An alternative is to re-pot into the simply beautiful Angus & Celeste Raw Earth Planter. Look for a pot that allows the plant to drain free of excess water if re-potting out of a plastic growers pot.

** Please note all of our plants are hand selected for their quality and individual character. The plant you receive may not be the exact one pictured but it will be of the same quality.
